Intertidal Sushi

Forage the shoreline, then sit down on the rocks and roll it into sushi with a flask of hot sake.

Price$95 each
Length2.5 hours
Group4 to 8
SeasonYear round, tide-dependent
Leaves fromCamp, on foot

Everything in the Intertidal Forage, and then you eat it.

Same walk out from camp, same shoreline, same slow business of turning things over and working out what they are. The difference is the last half hour, when we settle down on the rocks with a pot of warm sushi rice, a stack of nori, wasabi and pickled ginger, and a flask of hot sake, and roll our own with whatever came off the bench we’re sitting on. It’s a very hard thing to beat.

What ends up in the roll depends on the season and on what the tide gives us that day, and part of the pleasure is not knowing until you’re out there. If the swell comes up or a biotoxin advisory closes the harvest, we’ll run it anyway on ingredients your guide brings, and nobody has ever gone home disappointed.

When we go

Low tide sets the time, so it moves around. These are the next days we can get out on the rocks.

What we’ll do

Two hours of foraging and then half an hour of eating, all of it on the shore.

  1. Meet at camp. Bags, and the brief
  2. Walk out to the bench
  3. Identification. What goes in the roll and what doesn't
  4. Harvest whatever the season is giving
  5. Clean and prep on the rocks. Rice out of the pot, sake on to warm
  6. Roll and eat, sitting on the shore
  7. Back at camp

What is included

Your guide, harvest gear, sushi rice, nori, soy, wasabi, pickled ginger, hot sake, and everything to prep with.

What to bring

Strong water shoes, long pants, and a layer for sitting still at the end.

Good to know

  • All ages, with children accompanied by an adult. There's sake for those who want it and green tea from the same pot for those who don't.
  • What's available changes with the season and the tide, so we'll tell you what to expect closer to the day.
  • No fishing license is needed for seaweed. If you're taking shellfish or urchin you'll want one, and a one-day license runs about $21.
  • Tide-scheduled, so the meeting time changes daily. We'll agree the day once you've booked.
  • If the swell or a biotoxin advisory closes the harvest, the day runs anyway on ingredients we bring.
