Special Events
A few times a year somebody who really knows this country brings something of their own to the coast. These are their events, run their way, and they are worth clearing a weekend for. Some of them happen here at camp and some are up the road.

Camp Catch n Cook
Kevin Smith of Catch N Cook California, with Taku Kondo of Outdoor Chef Life
Three days of foraging, fishing and campfire cooking with Kevin Smith and Taku Kondo. You catch it, you clean it, you cook it over the fire, and you eat better than you do at home. The first one sold out with a waitlist behind it.
The camp is closed to everything else those days, so there are no campsites and no classes from the 5th to the 9th.
One seat, ours to give
Kevin sells the seats on his own site, and he gave us exactly one. We are not selling it first-come, we are drawing for it. Leave your email and we will pick somebody at random. It costs nothing to enter and you buy nothing to be in it; the winner gets the chance to take the seat at Kevin’s price.

Tuesday 24 November 2026, 3:30 to 6:30 pm · Mendocino, not at camp
Sea Urchin and Mussels
Run by Kevin Smith of Catch N Cook California
Three hours out on the Mendocino shoreline at the back end of the day, finding and taking sea urchin and mussels with somebody who does it for a living. The rocks here are generous if you know what you are looking at, and by the end of the afternoon you will.
There is a short steep walk down to get there, and a fishing licence is required. Kevin takes the booking and sets the price.

The Low Tide Weekend
Wilderfolk, with a noted chef, a local winemaker, a folk band, and a guest from everyone’s favorite survival show
Three nights at camp on the lowest tides of the year, for Elders and Chiefs and their people. Friday starts with sunset cocktails, urchin and oyster tapas, and a chance to meet everyone by the fire. Saturday we’re out on the rocks at six, when the water pulls back further than it will all year, and back in time for candy cap pancakes. In the afternoon a guest from everyone’s favorite survival show teaches a bushcraft class, and then it’s the long table: a seafood feast by a noted chef, with purple urchin paella, a salad of foraged greens and fresh local sourdough with garlic and bolete butter, wines poured and explained by a local winemaker, and live folk music while the light goes. Sauna and hot tubs every night. Twelve adults and twelve children, with daytime activities for the kids and babysitting for the little ones. $1,500 a person; children under 12 free, 12 to 21 half price.
Friday’s tapas and drinks, Saturday’s pancake breakfast, the sandwich bar lunch and the feast are included. Friday and Sunday meals are your own, and we’ll point you to the good places in town. This one is for members: join the tribe and you’re in.

The Mushroom Weekend
Wilderfolk, with an expert mushroom guide, an expert chef, a local winemaker, a folk band and a special guest
Three nights at camp when the lobster mushrooms are up and the huckleberries hang heavy on the bushes, for Elders and Chiefs and their people. Friday opens with sunset drinks and tapas by the fire. Saturday starts with a pancake breakfast, then a whole day in the forest with an expert guide, learning what’s up, what’s good to eat and where to look. Back at the long table an expert chef cooks a dinner around the coast’s own mushrooms, with wines poured and explained by a local winemaker, live folk music while the light goes, and homemade candy cap ice cream to finish. There’s a special guest on the way too, and we’ll say who once it’s settled. Sauna and hot tubs every night. Twelve adults and twelve children, with daytime activities for the kids. $1,500 a person; children under 12 free, 12 to 21 half price.
