Fifty thousand acres of coast redwood on the Lost Coast, nearly all of it behind a locked gate, and we’ll spend the whole day out in it with the people who look after the place year round.
We’ll be in a 4×4 ATV, which is the fun way to do it and also the only way to cover this much ground in a day. Ridge roads, old skid trails, and the coastal terrace high above Usal Beach with black sand below you and the ocean laid out to the horizon. What you’ll hear about along the way is a working forest rather than a view: a harvest unit, a restoration unit, and the honest argument between the two. Chris hosts, which he can do because looking after this forest is his other job.
Lunch comes with us, out in the trees. And when we get up onto the terrace in the afternoon a bottle of Anderson Valley wine comes out at the overlook, which is a small thing that turns a very good day into one you’ll be telling people about for years.
