Forest bathing is a real practice and a lovely one. A trained guide takes a small group into a redwood grove and, over a couple of hours, gives you a series of simple invitations: notice what’s moving, notice what’s underfoot, close your eyes and listen to what’s out there. That’s the whole method. You’ll cover about a quarter of a mile in two hours, and you’ll come away having seen more in that quarter mile than most people see in a five mile hike.

The grove is half an hour from camp and the trees in it are big enough that the light comes down soft and the sound of everything else just stops. Phones go in a basket at the start, which people resist for roughly four minutes. Near the end everybody spreads out for twenty minutes alone, well out of sight of each other, which sounds like it’ll be the awkward part and turns out to be the part people talk about afterwards. Then there’s tea brewed right there on the ground, and you can say what you noticed or say nothing at all.

It’s the gentlest thing on the menu and it’s the one people come back glowing about. If you’ve been running hot for months, this is the one to book.

What we’ll do

Two hours, a quarter of a mile, and nothing at all to hurry for.

  1. Meet at the grove, phones away
  2. What's in motion, ten minutes standing
  3. Move fifty yards, what's underfoot
  4. Sound only, eyes closed
  5. Twenty minutes alone, spread out of sight
  6. Tea, and whoever wants to talk talks
  7. Done

What is included

Your guide, ground pads, tea.

What to bring

A warm layer. You won't be moving enough to make your own heat.

Good to know

  • We go in decent weather only. Nobody wants to sit still in a redwood grove in the rain, so if the forecast turns we'll move your date rather than soak you.
  • It isn't really one for children under twelve.
  • Six to twelve of you, and you pick your date on the form.
  • Want us to drive? Add the group van. It seats eleven, so a party of twelve means one car follows.
